A Los Angeles merchant has been ordered to pay $388,000 in fines for selling fake designer clothing — $250 for each phony item he peddled.

A court also placed Ahmad Salim on seven years' probation.

During that time he may not possess, sell, manufacture or store any counterfeit goods. If that order is violated he must close his business.

The City Attorney's office said Tuesday that Salim was arrested following a joint investigation by Los Angeles police and the FBI.

Investigators who visited his El Socalo store in downtown's fashion district say they bought knockoffs of Burberry shirts, True Religion jeans and other exclusive brands.

In all, authorities say, Salim sold 1,552 counterfeit pieces since 2004.

They say he kept the items hidden in a back room.
