City police and Department of Homeland Security special agents are seeking criminal charges against a Brockton man who they say set up a kiosk in the Westgate Mall to sell counterfeit fragrances.

Police plan to charge Mohammad “MD” Talukder, 33, of 587 Pleasant St., with the sale of counterfeit goods.

Friday, authorities descended on the kiosk where they confiscated approximately $30,000 in counterfeit fragrances, according to Officer Scott Uhlman, the city’s code enforcement officer.

About 450 boxes of men’s and women’s perfume, including those labeled as Calvin Klein, Ralph Lauren Polo, and Hugo Boss, were confiscated after being identified as counterfeit, said Uhlman.

“The majority of these items are manufactured in China and India and contain ingredients that the FDA has identified as carcinogenic, and if you knew what was in them you would never put it on your body,” Vice President of Coty Beauty Inc., James Duggan, who was on hand to identify the product, said in a Brockton police press release issued Friday.

Talukder’s immigration status is in question, said Uhlman. An employee at the kiosk, whose name was not released, was arrested Friday by Homeland Security after authorities determined he was not legal to be in this country, the press release stated.

Friday’s seizure of goods comes after Coty Beauty received a customer complaint through an unnamed manufacturers.

“Counterfeit good ‘Knock Off's’ have a direct impact on the local and national economy,” the press release stated, adding that “Brockton Police and DHS have been working actively with product representatives to root out counterfeit sales in the City of Brockton.”
