A 61-year-old Watsonville man, who is accused of brandishing a fake law-enforcement badge and impersonating a deputy while loitering at an Aptos resort early this month, was arrested Wednesday morning with five weapons in his possession.
The accused, James Heffner, was taken in custody by Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s Office on suspicion of impersonating a peace officer, possession of stolen property, possession of a loaded and concealed firearm and possession of a large-capacity magazine, said Sgt. Chris Clark, spokesman at the Sheriff’s Office.
On Oct. 6, deputies went to Seascape Resort but did not immediately locate Heffner, Clark said.
He allegedly went to the business in the afternoon, “identified himself as someone working with the Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s Office and presented a shield, a badge,” Clark said. There was no indication he wore any uniform.
Wednesday, a witness reported seeing an SUV matching descriptions of Heffner’s vehicle and deputies located him at Seascape Village Shopping Center.
They arrested him in connection with impersonation of an officer after deputies saw the fake badge, Clark said. The badge was marked “City of Phoenix.”
A search revealed five weapons, three handguns and one rifle, in Heffner’s possession, he said.
One of the pistols was reported stolen, Clark said.
He remained in custody at Santa Cruz County Jail on Thursday in lieu of $25,000 bond.
