Counterfeit Gifts Are Coming Home For The Holidays

Holiday shoppers risk being deceived by fake goods

Los Angeles, CA, February 12, 2014 – The joy of the holiday season brings a new twist to gift giving; counterfeit products are coming home for the holidays and unaware consumers are the recipients of these often dangerous or deadly gifts. Nationwide warnings from the FBI and law enforcement underscore the risk to holiday shoppers of being deceived this season by an avalanche of fake items. Over $750 Billion in counterfeit goods are produced each year and end up purchased by unsuspecting consumers from holiday vendors, retail shops and websites, including Amazon and eBay.

Recently televised warnings from the FBI, federal and local law enforcement included actual counterfeit products provided by The Counterfeit Report® (www.TheCounterfeitReport.com), a popular consumer protection website. The counterfeit products clearly demonstrate the ability and sophistication of counterfeiters to produce very deceptive counterfeit products. "Consumers are urged to consider the economic and personal risk of buying counterfeit goods, and encouraged to be skeptical of goods unless purchased from authorized retailers" says Craig Crosby, publisher of The Counterfeit Report. Popular counterfeited products include fragrances, sporting goods, electronics, shoes, cell phone cases and pharmaceuticals. All are viewable on the website with information to help consumers avoid the look-a-like fakes. For example;

  • Counterfeit Apple iPhone chargers have killed one person and put another in a coma from electrocution.
  • Counterfeit fragrances ingredients may include urine, bacteria and antifreeze.
  • Counterfeit cell phone cases break easily and the phone may be lost or damaged.
  • Counterfeit batteries may not work, cause fires or explode if lacking the proper venting.

"There are serious quality issues with counterfeits, and the lack of value for consumers" says Crosby, offering examples of counterfeit brand name products including purchases from eBay and Amazon. "People feel they have confidence in the iconic businesses –Amazon, eBay and Groupon -- but we see that confidence is misplaced when these businesses show or perform in a deceptive manner." adds Crosby.

With 91% of holiday shoppers planning to go online to buy gifts at bargain prices this holiday season, holiday vendors and the web is a haven for scam artists selling counterfeit merchandise. Unfortunately, unscrupulous online and local vendors pop up to sell counterfeit goods when consumers are most vulnerable and seeking gifts for loved ones. These vendors often disappear after the sale and before the recipient unwraps the poor quality and worthless gifts. Crosby's recommendation, "Buy from authorized retailers, pay with a credit card, and when in doubt, compare your item to a known authentic item."
