Impersonating The Police Is Easy With eBay Counterfeit Badges

eBay turns a blind eye to dangerous counterfeits.

September 8, 2017, Los Angeles, CA – Are you talking with the real police? How would you know? Fake officers are targeting businesses, children and immigrants.

  • Multiple incidents of phony badge use in rapes, robberies, assaults and by a child predator were identified by The New York Daily News. A group even formed a sham police precinct. Former NYPD Internal Affairs Chief Charles Campisi reports that rapes by police impersonators are a particularly widespread problem in New York City, and across the country.
  • In April 2017, ABC reported NYPD arrested 2 men robbing victims using fake badges. The NYPD makes about 100 arrests a year for impersonating an officer, and has a dedicated unit chasing down phony cops.
  • In January 2014, a man attempted to gain access to the secure area of Reagan National Airport using a counterfeit CIA badge, but was prevented from doing so after Transportation Security Administration officers noticed inconsistencies with the man’s statements and credentials.

The identification cards shown below were made-to-order from eBay sellers bearing the names and photos of U.S. Senator Kamala Harris and former U.S. Attorney General Loretta Lynch. Badges were also purchased on eBay to accompany the phony identification.

Despite repeated written notifications, eBay (NASDAQ: EBAY) continues to be the “one stop” shopping market for anyone around the world to buy fake law enforcement badges and identification cards. Counterfeit FBI, LAPD and other law enforcement badges are common on eBay and available to terrorists, child predators and other criminals. eBay collects a transaction fee for each fake item sold.

The Counterfeit Report found over 2,700 fake items and sent hundreds of email reports, press releases and warnings to eBay senior staff, including eBay CEO Devin Wenig, General Counsel Marie Oh Huber and Global Intellectual Property Brand Manager Julien Dudouit. The press releases were viewed over 400 times.

Now, 1-year later, the sellers and listings remain. eBay even goes to the alarming extreme as to send email solicitations to purchase the counterfeit police items.

Public trust is destroyed when companies don't align themselves with ethical behavior and diligence, and put profit before protecting the public and national security.

18,000 U.S. federal, state and local law enforcement agencies employ 1.1 million men and women who rely on easily recognizable identification to secure public trust and reassure confidence. The consequences or misuse of counterfeits is indisputable.

The counterfeit current issue FBI, LAPD, Secret Service, and other law enforcement badges and ID shown below from eBay listings, or purchased by The Counterfeit Report, were repeatedly reported to eBay.
