The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is warning consumers whose vehicle airbags were replaced after an accident, they may have counterfeit airbag systems that won't function properly. The NHTSA conducted tests on 10 fake airbags and all 10 failed.

A Union County NC man is facing trafficking charges after federal agents said they found more than 1,600 counterfeit airbags at his home.

An estimated 240,000 cars and trucks may be effected. NHTSA obtained and tested counterfeit air bags bearing the American Honda Motor, Co., Inc. corporate branding and insignia that were not not original equipment parts manufactured by Honda. The warning effects vehicle owners who have had their airbags replaced within the last 3 years by independent repair shops, and people who bought cars recently involved in accidents in which the airbags were replaced.

The NHTSA action is a warning, or customer advisory, rather than a formal recall.

The most important factor is determining if any airbags in your vehicle have ever been replaced. Counterfeit parts could only have been installed when an airbag was replaced, most likely because of a moderate to severe collision.

Airbags installed when the vehicle was originally assembled are not affected.
