Nikon has confirmed the existence of counterfeit Nikon EN-EL3 batteries.
Counterfeit products may not be equipped with safety mechanisms such as the built in protection device. When these counterfeit products are used or charged, camera performance may be sacrificed, or the products may be the cause of fire or explosion due to the generation of extreme heat or leakage. In the worst cases, people may be burned or otherwise injured, and of course cameras or battery chargers may be damaged. Therefore, from both a performance standpoint and a safety standpoint, the use of only original Nikon products, equipped with safety mechanisms including the protection device, with your Nikon digital camera is recommended.
The popular rechargeable lithium ion EN-EL3 batteries are used in the NIKON D50, D70, D70s and D100 cameras.
